Northeast Arc
The Northeast Arc is dedicated to providing lifelong individualized supports to people with, or at risk of, developing disabilities and their families, ensuring opportunities to choose and realize their goals of where and how they learn, live, work, socialize and play.
The Northeast Arc is Not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, incorporated in 1954. The Northeast Arc was founded to provide alternative and supportive placements for individuals with developmental disabilities by these individuals, their parents and siblings. These people remain the driving force behind our development of supports and services. The Northeast Arc is motivated by the belief that every person has the right to direct the course of his or her life to the highest degree possible.
The Northeast Arc is comprised of three programmatic divisions: Family Support, Residential, and Vocational (Heritage Industries). The Northeast Arc pioneered the first vocational training and employment program for adults with emotional, cognitive and physical disabilities on the North Shore, Heritage Industries. For the first time, developmentally disabled individuals had the opportunity to learn work skills, develop effective work habits, and earn a fair wage. Today, Heritage has facilities in three communities and serves over 250 people from age 18 to over 70 years of age.
The Northeast Arc is a leader in providing quality residential services in the Commonwealth. In 1973, Residential Services was developed in order to provide alternative supports to individuals with disabilities outside of their family home or institution. Residential Services currently provides serves to over 100 people in 35 homes and apartments in 8 communities that provide a variety of supports including behavioral supports, medical supports and supports to individuals with Alzheimer’s. The opening of Deaf Services provided the Northeast Arc with national recognition.
Although the Northeast Arc has always been a leader in providing supports to families, the Family Support Division wasn’t clearly defined until the early 1980’s. The definition of this division was a result of responses to needs expressed by families. The services offered at the time grew to include Recreation, Specialized Home Care, Community Education, Respite, Advocacy, Bilingual Family Support and Early Intervention Services. In the 1990’s the Family Support Service Division saw further growth and development with the beginning of the Autism Support Center, In Home Support, Personal Care Attendant Services, Legal Services, Volunteer Services as well as centered-based Childcare services.
The Northeast Arc has grown into one of the most influential human service agencies in the Commonwealth. The scope of service models and demographic area has expanded significantly in the past half century. The Northeast Arc currently services over 10,000 people with disabilities in 129 communities in the Commonwealth. During every stage of growth, the Agency has been committed to fulfilling the mission of supporting individuals, their families and the community to best of our abilities.
